What lapidary equipment should you use for different rocks?
Choose equipment from the specimen outward: identify structure and material, measure the actual rough, decide whether the goal is slabbing, trimming, tumbling, cabbing or flat-face polishing, then select the smallest tool class that safely handles that job. Agate, jasper, quartz, geodes and petrified wood share some hard-silica workflows but differ in fractures, cavities, size and handling risk.
Five material profiles with different failure points
Hard, tough silica material; banding and fractures can affect cutting direction.
- Cut
- Trim saw for smaller preforms; slab saw when rough must first become repeatable slabs.
- Tumble
- Excellent candidate when pieces are sound and loads are grouped with similar-hardness material.
- Shape / finish
- Strong cabochon material; progress through controlled diamond grinding and polishing.
- Consumables
- Diamond blade/wheels; staged silicon-carbide tumbling grit where tumbling; appropriate final polish.
Generally hard and durable, but seams, brecciation and inclusions can change how a piece behaves.
- Cut
- Trim saw for smaller pieces and preforms; slab saw for larger rough or display slabs.
- Tumble
- Excellent for sound pieces grouped with compatible hard material.
- Shape / finish
- Excellent cabochon and polished-slab material when structurally sound.
- Consumables
- Diamond cutting/grinding tools; staged silicon-carbide grit for tumbling; suitable final polish.
Hard but comparatively brittle; crystal faces, internal fractures and terminations can be more important than raw hardness.
- Cut
- Use controlled wet diamond cutting only when cutting improves the intended specimen or lapidary project.
- Tumble
- Can tumble well when sound pieces are matched by hardness and fractures are screened out.
- Shape / finish
- Suitable for cabbing/polishing, but fragile crystal material should not be treated like massive rough.
- Consumables
- Diamond cutting/grinding tools and staged abrasives appropriate to hard silica.
Highly variable: shells may be chalcedony/quartz-bearing while interiors can include quartz, calcite and other minerals.
- Cut
- Measure full diameter, inspect shell stability, secure the piece and choose a saw with real workholding/capacity headroom.
- Tumble
- Usually not the first workflow for intact geodes; separated solid fragments may be treated according to their actual mineralogy.
- Shape / finish
- Cut faces can be lapped/polished when the structure is sound; crystal interiors require protection.
- Consumables
- Capacity-matched diamond blade; face-lapping abrasives only when polishing the cut face is desired.
Hard and brittle when quartz-rich; large pieces can be heavy and may contain old cracks or crystal-filled voids.
- Cut
- A slab saw is the normal route for large sound rough; handling, vise geometry and feed matter as much as blade class.
- Tumble
- Smaller sound pieces can tumble well; large display material is usually better suited to slabbing/lapping.
- Shape / finish
- Excellent for polished slabs and cabochons when sound; preserve grain/pattern orientation during layout.
- Consumables
- Diamond blade/wheels; staged abrasives; final polish chosen for the actual silicified material.
Choose a finishing path from material + surface condition
Polish cannot repair a scratch that belongs to an earlier stage.
Select the material, current surface and final goal. The engine will decide whether you should move forward—or go back a grit/wheel stage first.
Polish recommendations are starting points, not universal promises. Mineral mix, porosity, undercutting, heat sensitivity, stabilization and prior surface quality can change the best finish.

Can I use the same lapidary setup for agate, jasper and quartz?
Many hard-silica workflows overlap, but fractures, crystal form, specimen value, size and intended finish can change the safest tool path. Treat hardness as one input rather than the entire decision.
Why are geodes separated from ordinary quartz?
An intact geode is a structural problem as well as a mineral problem. Shell stability, cavity geometry and delicate crystals can determine workholding and cutting choices before mineral hardness does.
Why does petrified wood need its own equipment path?
Quartz-rich petrified wood can be hard, brittle, heavy and large. Large pieces create handling, capacity and feed-system requirements that are different from small cabbing rough.
Does this equipment guide mean a material is legal to collect?
No. Equipment suitability and collecting permission are separate questions. Verify the exact land, ownership and current rules before collecting or removing material.
