What is the best metal detector for gold?
There is no universal best gold detector. High-frequency VLF machines can be strong for small-gold sensitivity in manageable ground, while pulse-induction and advanced ground-optimized systems become more attractive as mineralization and depth demands increase. Choose by ground, target size, water exposure, experience and budget before brand.
Do not buy the most expensive gold detector until the ground proves you need that technology.
For fine gold in manageable ground, a purpose-built high-frequency VLF can be the rational entry point. As mineralization, salt or depth demands rise, pulse-induction and advanced ground-optimized systems become more compelling. A detector that exceeds your site, skill and use frequency is not automatically a better purchase.

What can change the recommendation?
Ground mineralization
Hot rocks, magnetic mineralization and salt can make a technically sensitive machine noisy or unstable. Ground handling is part of usable sensitivity.
Target size
A detector optimized for tiny shallow gold is not automatically the best choice for larger/deeper targets. Coil choice also changes the trade-off.
Water requirement
“Waterproof coil” and “waterproof detector” are not the same. The SDC 2300 is currently specified as submersible to 10 ft; several other models only submerge the coil or have shallower limits.
Weight and hours/day
A detector that is uncomfortable after several hours reduces actual ground coverage. Compare field weight and harness requirements alongside electronics.
Experience
Automatic setup can shorten the learning curve, while advanced systems expose more controls and interpretation choices. Buying above your ability can waste budget.
Site quality
A $10,000 detector cannot compensate for detecting where there is no recoverable gold or no legal permission. Validate the site before escalating equipment cost.
Research the gold location separately
