There is no universal best metal detector. Choose first by target type, saltwater or mineralized-ground exposure, full-submersion requirement, desired target-ID control and experience. Then compare models that satisfy those constraints inside your budget.
The best detector is the least expensive model that satisfies the real target, ground and water constraints while giving you enough control to grow.
Do not pay flagship prices for controls you will not use. Do not buy a land-focused detector if regular surf/submersion is part of the job. And do not confuse general treasure performance with dedicated severe-ground natural-gold prospecting.

General-purpose “gold capable” is not the same buying problem as dedicated goldfield equipment.
Some all-terrain detectors include gold modes or high-frequency options, but severe mineralization, tiny native-gold sensitivity and deep goldfield work can justify dedicated gold VLF, hybrid, PI or ZVT systems.

How much should a beginner spend on a metal detector?
Spend enough to meet the real environment. If you need saltwater performance or full submersion, those are hard constraints. Otherwise a mid-priced multi-frequency detector can leave more budget for recovery tools, headphones and field time.
Is multi-frequency always better than single frequency?
Not automatically. Simultaneous multi-frequency can improve versatility across changing ground and salt conditions, but coil choice, settings, target separation and operator skill still matter.
Do I need a waterproof detector or only a waterproof coil?
If you will submerge the control unit, you need a manufacturer-rated fully submersible detector. A waterproof coil alone does not protect a non-submersible control box.
Can a general metal detector find natural gold?
Some can, especially models with suitable gold modes/frequencies, but dedicated gold detectors can be more appropriate in difficult mineralized goldfield ground. Use the dedicated gold-detector guide for that intent.
