Can I use a metal detector for gold in British Columbia?
Using a metal detector to explore for minerals or placer minerals is prospecting in B.C. Only a free miner or an agent of a free miner may enter mineral lands to explore. Current title rights, surface access, parks/heritage restrictions and disturbance rules still control what can be done at a specific place.
Gold panning and gold detecting are not the same activity
Recreational hand-panning is limited to a hand pan and hand shovel. B.C. explicitly excludes metal detectors from that recreational exception and identifies detector use for minerals or placer minerals as prospecting.
Land, claims and mineral rights
Check Mineral Titles Online immediately before field use. A gold occurrence or recreational panning reserve does not establish detector rights. Existing mineral titles, alienated/protected land, private-surface interests and site-specific restrictions can override generic prospecting rules.

B.C. Information Update 38 (April 2025) defines metal detectors as hand-held tools and says certain nil/negligible-disturbance exploration can generally occur without a Mines Act permit in the described circumstances. This does not replace Free Miner, mineral-title, surface-access, heritage, environmental or other legal requirements.
