Can I use a metal detector for gold in Alberta?
Alberta separates recreational gold panning from prospecting. The panning exception does not authorize a metal detector. Limited prospecting may be possible where mineral rights are available and there will be no significant disturbance, but applicable surface or subsurface leaseholder/landowner consent and current mineral restrictions still have to be resolved.
Gold panning and gold detecting are not the same activity
Recreational gold panning in Alberta rivers and streams with hand-held, non-mechanized equipment does not require a mineral agreement or licence. Sluicing or other placer-mining methods have a separate placer minerals licence framework; dredging is prohibited.
Land, claims and mineral rights

Surface ownership and mineral ownership are separate, so also resolve legal surface access and any leaseholder or landowner consent.

Hand-held detector prospecting and disturbance
Alberta says limited prospecting and geophysical surveying may be carried out where mineral rights are available and there will be no significant disturbance, with consent from any applicable surface or subsurface leaseholder or landowner. The province explicitly says recreational panning is not a prospecting activity, so panning permission is not detector permission.
