Gold Prospecting in Yukon

Plan gold prospecting and metal detecting without confusing gold geology with detector authority: compare documented gold context, panning-only areas, current claim checks, protected/no-go sites and exact-source references across Canada.

Gold present ≠ metal detector allowed. Panning rules, detector/prospecting authority, surface access, mineral tenure/claims, digging and keeping recovered material are separate questions. Every current Gold record requires a fresh tenure/land check before field use; recheck the official source before travel.

Field-use rule: a mapped coordinate can be a geological or area reference rather than a lawful access point. Claims, land ownership, closures, heritage rules and prospecting authority can change; exact legal access must be rechecked.

Yukon Gold Prospecting & Metal Detecting Field Guide

Quick answer

A Yukon recreational gold-panning allowance does not authorize a metal detector. The current recreational rule permits only a pan and shovel. Detector-based placer prospecting or recovery therefore requires a separate current check of placer tenure, claim-holder authority or permission, mining land-use requirements, surface access, Settlement Land and protected/withdrawn land. This regional layer has 21 gold records. Records marked Research or Panning only are not statements that recreational detector use is authorized.

Can I use a metal detector for gold in Yukon?

A Yukon recreational gold-panning allowance does not authorize a metal detector. The current recreational rule permits only a pan and shovel. Detector-based placer prospecting or recovery therefore requires a separate current check of placer tenure, claim-holder authority or permission, mining land-use requirements, surface access, Settlement Land and protected/withdrawn land.

Gold panning and gold detecting are not the same activity

Recreational gold panning is limited to eligible public land that has not been withdrawn from prospecting or staking and has not been staked by a prospector or miner. Current Yukon guidance allows a gold pan and shovel only and says use of any other equipment is not allowed under recreational panning.

Land, claims and mineral rights

Before field use, check the Yukon mining claims database and GeoYukon for placer/mineral tenure, land tenure, First Nation Traditional Territories and Settlement Land, parks/protected areas and mining activity. Ground open to walking or recreational panning is not automatically open to detector prospecting or recovery.

Hand-held detector prospecting and disturbance

If proposed detector work forms part of Class 1 placer exploration, current Yukon guidance requires a Class 1 notification Yukon-wide unless the work is covered by another mining land-use approval. This does not itself grant claim-holder permission, surface access or authority on Settlement Land or withdrawn/protected land.
