Nunavut Gold Prospecting & Metal Detecting Field Guide
No current Nunavut rule establishes a blanket casual metal-detector right for gold. Under the Nunavut Mining Regulations, only a licensee or authorized person may prospect for the purpose of recording a claim; prospecting is prohibited on recorded claims/leases and other closed lands except for the rights holder, and surface-rights consent may also be required. Inuit Owned Lands have separate NTI/Regional Inuit Association mineral and access rules. This regional layer has 21 gold records. Can I use a metal detector for gold in Nunavut?

Gold panning and gold detecting are not the same activity
Nunavut has no territory-wide recreational gold-panning exception in the current mineral-tenure framework that can safely be treated as detector permission. Gold geology, the ability to travel on land, mineral rights, a licence to prospect, claim/lease status, surface access and mineral removal are separate questions.
Land, claims and mineral rights
Check the live Nunavut Map Viewer/Nunavut Map Selection system immediately before field use, then separately resolve Inuit Owned Land, surface rights, withdrawals, protected areas and any project-specific authorization. Federal open-data mineral-claim coverage is updated daily, but a claim map is not an access permit.

Hand-held detector prospecting and disturbance
Low-impact prospecting does not erase mineral-tenure or surface-access rules. The Nunavut Agreement provides a specific access framework for certain prospecting on Inuit Owned Lands, including DIO consent; activities requiring greater disturbance can trigger additional land-use, water, planning and environmental approvals.
Current legal transition
Nunavut devolution is still in transition. As of September 5, 2026, Canada continues to administer Crown lands and mineral rights under the current Nunavut Mining Regulations; administration and control are scheduled to transfer to the Government of Nunavut on April 1, 2027. The 2023 Recommended Nunavut Land Use Plan was not accepted as drafted on July 3, 2026, so it is not being treated here as an approved territory-wide plan.
