Gold Prospecting in Western Australia

Western Australia is tenure-first. The map includes a managed Yalgoo prospecting opportunity plus conservative district planning markers; it never treats a historic goldfield or tourism reference as blanket public prospecting ground.

A goldfield pin is not prospecting permission. Use the official prospecting boundary, land-status map and tenure source before detecting or panning. Geological gold potential never overrides land ownership, mining tenements, protected areas, permits or current closures. Research-only records are deliberately non-navigable.
Before you prospect

Western Australia access rule

Gold searching is prospecting under WA law, not statutory fossicking. A current Miner’s Right is required on eligible Crown land; current TENGRAPH tenure, pastoral/occupier obligations, tenement permission and Section 40E pathways can control access.

Gold context: Gold nuggets, Archaean goldfields, managed prospecting tenements and district research leads

Licence / permitCurrent WA Miner’s Right required for prospecting on eligible Crown land.
Land accessA Miner’s Right does not authorise prospecting on private/reserved land and does not override current tenement or occupier controls.
Protected landNational parks, nature reserves, townsites and other classified reserves are excluded from ordinary Miner’s Right access.
MethodsMetal detector and handheld prospecting tools on authorised ground; Section 40E access is handheld-tools only.

Filter by state, gold context, precision, access status and trip radius. Each place includes a decision-ready field profile, evidence links and navigation only where the destination is defensible.

Map ≠ prospecting permission. Verified means current evidence supports the modeled activity; Conditional means resolve a stated condition first; Research is context only; Closed/prohibited means do not prospect. Navigation never overrides tenure, claims, ownership, closures, permits or posted rules.

Use the goldfield map without guessing access

1

Choose a prospecting candidate

Filter by gold context and access class. Research-only markers are leads for further checking, not recommendations to prospect.

2

Open the prospecting boundary

Use the official map or area guide. A regional marker can sit kilometres away from a legal prospecting boundary.

3

Check Miner’s Right, licence and tenure

State rules differ. A Miner’s Right or recreational authority never automatically grants access to private land, mining tenements, reserves or closed ground.

4

Check current conditions

Fire bans, forestry operations, tides, road closures, wildlife protections and park works can change whether a trip is practical.

How records are classified

Verified means a current authoritative source directly supports the location as a recreational gold-prospecting area. Conditional means a licence, Miner’s Right, official boundary, permit or site condition must be satisfied. Permission covers managed visitor access or land/claim-holder permission. Research only marks a mineral-rich region or visitor lead that is not itself a prospecting authorisation. Closed / prohibited records remain visible to prevent accidental access.

Every record includes a checked date, named source, coordinate-precision label, land manager, methods, restrictions, season/conditions, hazards and a field-planning checklist. The decision badge tells visitors whether to verify a boundary, resolve conditions, obtain permission, research further or avoid prospecting. Directions are suppressed unless a record has a sufficiently defensible destination; no badge or checklist grants prospecting permission.
