Diamond twist drills + stable feed
Small holes in hard stone demand alignment, gentle feed, lubrication/cooling and a bit that matches the material. A press improves geometry but cannot compensate for a poor bit or bad workholding.
Core drill + compatible machine
Core-drill shank diameter and machine chuck capacity must be matched deliberately. Larger cores raise torque, cooling and breakout concerns.

What is the best drill for gemstones?
The best setup is the one that holds the stone securely, runs the correct diamond drill at an appropriate speed and keeps the cutting zone cooled/lubricated. For repeatable holes, a dedicated gem drill or press is usually easier to control than freehand drilling.
Can I drill agate or quartz with an ordinary twist drill?
Ordinary metal/wood twist drills are not the normal cutting system for hard gem materials. Use stone/glass-appropriate diamond drills and follow their cooling and speed requirements.
Why does a gem drill need water or lubricant?
Diamond drill systems commonly use water or another specified coolant to carry heat and debris away. Follow the exact bit and machine instructions; do not improvise around electricity and water.
How do I avoid breakout at the back of a hole?
Workholding, gentle feed and drilling strategy matter. Some workflows drill from both sides after careful alignment; test technique on low-value material before risking a valuable specimen.
