What size lapidary saw do you need?
Measure the largest cross-section you realistically cut, add practical headroom, then choose the smallest saw whose published workpiece limit safely contains that size. Blade diameter is only the model class; vise, carriage, arbor and blade exposure determine real capacity.
Saw size names describe blade diameter; the buying decision should use the manufacturer’s actual workpiece limits.

Does a 10-inch blade cut a 10-inch rock?
No. Blade diameter is not the same as usable workpiece cross-section. Guard, arbor, vise, carriage and blade exposure limit the actual specimen size.
How much extra capacity should I buy?
Enough for the next realistic rough size, not an arbitrary jump. This selector lets you add planning headroom, but workspace, handling and budget should constrain oversizing.
Can I rotate a rock to fit a smaller saw?
Sometimes geometry allows a different orientation, but do not use rotation to defeat workholding or clearance limits. The specimen still must be supported and cut safely.
Why is a 10-inch trim saw different from a 10-inch slab saw?
They solve different jobs and publish different capacity measures. The checked HPL 10-inch trim saw lists 3 1/8-inch cutting height, while the HT10 slab saw publishes a 3.5 × 7-inch workpiece cross-section.
