What lapidary equipment should you upgrade next?
Upgrade the bottleneck that prevents the next transformation you actually need. Larger rough points to cutting capacity; cabochons require preforms plus a cabbing route; flat display faces need controlled lapping; high tumbling volume may justify capacity or motion changes. Do not replace equipment that is not limiting the workflow.
The next upgrade should remove a real bottleneck, not duplicate a capability you already own.
Tell the planner what you are trying to unlock, what equipment is already available, the largest material you routinely process, expected throughput and budget. It will propose the smallest capability change that completes the next transformation.

If the rough does not fit, changing brands inside the same undersized machine class does not solve the bottleneck.

Should I upgrade a trim saw to a bigger trim saw or buy a slab saw?
If the bottleneck is larger rough and repeatable slabbing, moving to a slab-saw workflow is usually the capability change to evaluate. A larger trim saw can still be useful for larger preforms, but it is not automatically a substitute for slabbing.
Should I buy a cabbing machine if I already have a flat lap?
Only if cabochon shaping and throughput are the bottleneck. A flat lap can finish flat surfaces very well, while a cabbing machine is organized around curved cabochon shaping and sequential wheel work.
When does a vibratory tumbler make sense as an upgrade?
When you want higher finishing throughput or better shape retention and are prepared for the different loading/process discipline. It should solve a real result or capacity problem, not simply duplicate a rotary tumbler.
What if my budget is below the minimum sensible machine class?
The planner should tell you to delay, outsource, use shared access, buy pre-cut material, or solve infrastructure first rather than forcing an undersized purchase.
Is faceting an upgrade from cabbing?
Not in the ordinary sense. Faceting is a different precision geometry workflow. If indexed planar facets are the goal, evaluate a dedicated faceting platform, training path and lap/polish system instead of assuming a cabbing machine can be upgraded into one.
