Gold panning and gold detecting are not the same activity
New Brunswick does not provide a blanket recreational gold-detecting or panning permission through a mapped gold occurrence. Prospecting requires a prospecting licence, while current mineral tenure, surface access, notifications, withdrawn land and other applicable laws remain separate checks.
Land, claims and mineral rights

Hand-held detector prospecting and disturbance
The 2026 Act defines prospecting as land activities for locating/testing minerals and understanding geology that do not use power tools, but low-disturbance/no-power-tool work is not an exemption from the prospecting-licence requirement. Tenure, access, notification, protected-land and environmental rules still apply.
