Gold Prospecting in New Brunswick

Plan gold prospecting and metal detecting without confusing gold geology with detector authority: compare documented gold context, panning-only areas, current claim checks, protected/no-go sites and exact-source references across Canada.

Gold present ≠ metal detector allowed. Panning rules, detector/prospecting authority, surface access, mineral tenure/claims, digging and keeping recovered material are separate questions. Every current Gold record requires a fresh tenure/land check before field use; recheck the official source before travel.

Field-use rule: a mapped coordinate can be a geological or area reference rather than a lawful access point. Claims, land ownership, closures, heritage rules and prospecting authority can change; exact legal access must be rechecked.

New Brunswick Gold Prospecting & Metal Detecting Field Guide

Quick answer

Using a metal detector to locate or test for gold is treated conservatively as mineral prospecting. Under the 2026 Mineral Resources Act, a person must hold a prospecting licence to prospect for minerals; the current registry and site-specific land restrictions still control the exact ground. This regional layer has 21 gold records. Records marked Research or Panning only are not statements that recreational detector use is authorized.

Can I use a metal detector for gold in New Brunswick?

Using a metal detector to locate or test for gold is treated conservatively as mineral prospecting. Under the 2026 Mineral Resources Act, a person must hold a prospecting licence to prospect for minerals; the current registry and site-specific land restrictions still control the exact ground.

Gold panning and gold detecting are not the same activity

New Brunswick does not provide a blanket recreational gold-detecting or panning permission through a mapped gold occurrence. Prospecting requires a prospecting licence, while current mineral tenure, surface access, notifications, withdrawn land and other applicable laws remain separate checks.

Land, claims and mineral rights

Check NB e-CLAIMS immediately before field use. Existing claims/leases and withdrawn land cannot be assumed open, and private land, reserve lands, parks, Protected Natural Areas, military/federal land and other special land require separate treatment.

Hand-held detector prospecting and disturbance

The 2026 Act defines prospecting as land activities for locating/testing minerals and understanding geology that do not use power tools, but low-disturbance/no-power-tool work is not an exemption from the prospecting-licence requirement. Tenure, access, notification, protected-land and environmental rules still apply.
