Newfoundland and Labrador Gold Prospecting & Metal Detecting Field Guide
The province does not provide a blanket recreational gold-detecting permission for mapped gold occurrences. A prospector’s licence is not required simply to stake claims or conduct mineral exploration, but current mineral rights must be checked and exploration capable of ground disturbance, water-quality impairment or wildlife/habitat disruption requires government approval. A metal-detector map point must therefore not be treated as open ground. This regional layer has 25 gold records. Can I use a metal detector for gold in Newfoundland and Labrador?
The province does not provide a blanket recreational gold-detecting permission for mapped gold occurrences. Gold panning and gold detecting are not the same activity
Newfoundland and Labrador publishes extensive gold geology through MODS, GeoScience OnLine and the 2026 provincial Gold map, but a gold occurrence or project symbol does not create recreational detector access. Mineral tenure, surface access, project control, protected land, Indigenous land context, disturbance approval and recovery authority remain separate.
Land, claims and mineral rights
Check MinLAP and the provincial Mineral Lands layers immediately before field use. A mineral claim grants an exclusive right to explore for minerals within the claim, while surface access and activity approvals remain separate. In Labrador, Labrador Inuit Lands, Labrador Inuit Settlement Areas and other Indigenous consultation/approval requirements require additional checks.

Hand-held detector prospecting and disturbance
The province distinguishes ordinary prospecting from exploration work that can cause ground disturbance or other environmental effects. Do not infer permission to dig or recover gold from a hand-held detector alone. Planned work, current title, land access, water/road work and site-specific approvals must be checked before disturbing ground.
