Gold Prospecting in Nova Scotia

Plan gold prospecting and metal detecting without confusing gold geology with detector authority: compare documented gold context, panning-only areas, current claim checks, protected/no-go sites and exact-source references across Canada.

Gold present ≠ metal detector allowed. Panning rules, detector/prospecting authority, surface access, mineral tenure/claims, digging and keeping recovered material are separate questions. Every current Gold record requires a fresh tenure/land check before field use; recheck the official source before travel.

Field-use rule: a mapped coordinate can be a geological or area reference rather than a lawful access point. Claims, land ownership, closures, heritage rules and prospecting authority can change; exact legal access must be rechecked.

Nova Scotia Gold Prospecting & Metal Detecting Field Guide

Quick answer

Nova Scotia says metal detecting can be legal when it is not conducted to locate heritage objects, but detecting is prohibited on archaeological sites and cemeteries, private-land permission is required, and park rules vary. When the target is naturally occurring gold, the mineral-prospecting framework also applies: preliminary prospecting on open ground requires landowner permission and is limited to non-disturbance work; surface disruption requires at least a Mineral Exploration Licence. This regional layer has 21 gold records. Records marked Research or Panning only are not statements that recreational detector use is authorized.

Can I use a metal detector for gold in Nova Scotia?

Nova Scotia says metal detecting can be legal when it is not conducted to locate heritage objects, but detecting is prohibited on archaeological sites and cemeteries, private-land permission is required, and park rules vary. When the target is naturally occurring gold, the mineral-prospecting framework also applies: preliminary prospecting on open ground requires landowner permission and is limited to non-disturbance work; surface disruption requires at least a Mineral Exploration Licence.

Gold panning and gold detecting are not the same activity

Gold-targeted metal detecting is not treated as automatically open merely because a historic gold district is mapped. Nova Scotia mineral-rights, prospecting, landowner-access, heritage and disturbance rules must all be checked for the exact ground.

Land, claims and mineral rights

Use NovaROC immediately before field work to identify current mineral dispositions/open ground. A historic gold-district pin is a geology reference, not proof that the surface is public, the minerals are open, a licence holder has consented, or disturbance/recovery is authorized.

Hand-held detector prospecting and disturbance

Prospector Registration supports preliminary non-ground-disturbance prospecting on open ground with landowner permission. Any surface disruption requires at least a Mineral Exploration Licence and other applicable approvals. Heritage-object searching is a separate restriction and is not authorized by mineral prospecting rights.
