Hungary protects geological formations, minerals, mineral assemblages and fossils under the Nature Conservation Act. Current state nature-conservation guidance states that all collecting is prohibited in caves and protected geological presentation sites; collecting on protected natural areas requires authority permission and collecting on operating mine property requires prior permission from the mine owner/operator. Protected minerals and fossils also require nature-conservation authorization.

Hungarian state nature conservation lists the Rudabánya hominid locality as a nationally significant protected nature reserve. The current Rudapark visitor site displays prepared fossil-bearing layers and publishes exact access coordinates, opening hours and a trail/viewpoint system.

Bükk National Park describes Ipolytarnóc as a protected fossil area preserving shark teeth, petrified trees, plant impressions, vertebrate tracks and volcanic deposits. Its current visitor system uses a visitor centre and guided geological trail.
