Topaz Mountain Rockhound Recreation Area, Utah
Topaz Mountain in Utah’s Thomas Range is a Bureau of Land Management-listed recreation area where hobbyists can look for topaz and associated minerals. BLM confirms the collecting destination, but this page is a separate verified-place guide, not an atlas Ready-status assignment or exact specimen GPS pin. Check current BLM boundary maps and claims before collecting.
What can I find at Topaz Mountain?
Gem-quality and other topaz crystals occur in cavities in rhyolite and in weathered material. Other minerals recorded around the Thomas Range include quartz-family material and minerals associated with rhyolite and surrounding volcanic geology. Topaz has a Mohs hardness of 8 and perfect basal cleavage; it can break along cleavage planes despite high scratch hardness.
Where can collecting take place?
Use the Bureau of Land Management’s Topaz Mountain Rockhound Recreation Area boundary and the currently authorized area of public land, not a regional mountain-centroid or road waypoint. The BLM Fillmore Field Office is the relevant authority. Check unpatented mining claims, private/leased parcels and posted prohibitions before removing material. Protected fossil and cultural materials must remain in place.
Which methods and quantities are allowed?
Utah Geological Survey summarizes casual eligible BLM collection as up to 25 pounds plus one piece daily and 250 pounds per calendar year for common mineral specimens and similar materials, for personal noncommercial use. Surface disturbance must be negligible and explosives or powered excavation equipment are prohibited. Stay clear of active claims and private land; commercial collection requires a different authorization.
How should I prepare?
Topaz Mountain has desert terrain and little or no on-site visitor infrastructure. Confirm the current access road with BLM before travel, carry more water than usual, use safe eye protection and sturdy gloves for sharp rock, and tell someone where you intend to go. Weather can make unpaved roads impassable. Never drive off designated routes or climb unstable excavation faces.
Map and evidence limitations
This guide has no verified individual atlas coordinate or status row yet. The statewide atlas and its location popups should not display a fabricated pin for this destination. The BLM’s official Topaz Mountain recreation-area description establishes the public destination; the current trip-day open status and the precise collecting parcel remain to be checked.
