UTAH INTERACTIVE FIELD MAP
Inspect places, geology, access evidence and nearby context
The map keeps collecting leads, protected places and research occurrences visually distinct.
Rock and mineral reference images for Utah
These are real reference photographs from the site media library, not photographs of the exact mapped sites. Always confirm mineral identity and collection permissions separately.
TRIP-READY SHORTLIST

UTAH MINERAL DISCOVERY
What can you find rockhounding in Utah?
The atlas mixes visitor programs, stronger collecting leads, protected environments and geological research. Material record counts are not promises that collecting is allowed. Verify the exact location and manager before taking anything.

Dugway Geodes & Quartz
3 recordsSilica-lined cavities and chalcedony in western Utah sedimentary and volcanic terrain; published geode beds still require route, surface ownership and collection checks.
Topaz & Rhyolite Minerals
1 recordsThe Thomas Range is known for gem topaz in rhyolite cavities; specimen collecting depends on exact federal, state trust or private parcel rights.
Trilobites & Paleozoic Fossils
1 recordsThe Wheeler Shale and surrounding strata preserve trilobites; a managed fossil quarry differs from collecting protected vertebrate fossils.
Wonderstone & Jasper
1 recordsColor-banded rhyolite from western Utah is known as wonderstone; an occurrence does not automatically indicate a legal public dig.
Smoky Quartz & Crystal Pockets
4 recordsBeaver County and nearby mineral belts include smoky quartz contexts, often requiring travel on rough roads and exact land checks.
Agate & Chalcedony
0 recordsWestern desert washes expose silica materials but mining claims, parcels and vehicle access differ between sites.
No strong examples are currently surfaced for this material.
Petrified Wood
0 recordsPetrified wood is regulated distinctly from vertebrate fossils and archaeological material; quantity limits can apply on BLM parcels.
No strong examples are currently surfaced for this material.
Historic Ore & Copper Districts
234 recordsUtah's historic mineral districts are excellent geology research yet may include active claims, private mines and unstable workings.
LAND, CLAIMS & PERMISSION
Who controls the land matters more than the mineral pin
The state map’s land-status and claim layers are planning aids. Exact ownership, claims, protected-resource rules and current manager guidance still control field use.
BLM casual collecting
Utah Geological Survey summarizes small personal-use collections on eligible BLM parcels, generally up to 25 pounds plus one piece daily and 250 pounds yearly for certain material categories; confirm current local orders and resource type.
Utah Trust Lands
School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration rockhounding generally requires a specific permit. A BLM rule does not authorize collection on Trust Lands.
National parks, monuments and vertebrate fossils
National Park Service areas and important paleontology remain protected; vertebrate fossils require scientific authority rather than casual collecting.
Claims, military, tribal and private land
Check mineral claims and current parcel boundaries. Military and tribal property and private land require separate authorizations.
Desert field safety
Carry extra water, verified access directions, weather and road checks; abandoned mines, flash floods and extreme heat are serious risks.
WHEN TO GO
Utah rockhounding seasonal planner
Desert research window
Lower desert daytime conditions may be manageable, but remote road ice and short daylight constrain travel.
Prime western desert field season
Moderate temperatures favor quartz and geode trips; spring storms can close clay roads.
Extreme heat and storms
Remote geode and topaz terrain can become dangerously hot; thunderstorms and flash floods affect washes.
Autumn collection window
Cooler days suit approved desert outings, with higher elevations subject to early snow.
UTAH FIELD KIT
A practical field kit for Utah
Match equipment to the site and collecting method rather than carrying heavy tools by default.
Identification kit
Hand lens, magnet, notebook, scale, specimen bags and labels help preserve context and reduce guesswork.
River / gravel kit
Use sturdy footwear, gloves and eye protection. Check water level, access and disturbance rules before entering a stream or shoreline.
Geode / hard-rock kit
Eye protection and small hand tools are more useful than heavy equipment. Never enter mine workings or unstable cuts.
Fossil kit
Camera, scale, notebook and protective wrapping allow documentation without assuming removal is legal.
Panning kit
A basic pan, classifier and vial are enough for many recreational contexts; powered equipment can trigger different rules.
Navigation & safety
Carry offline mapping, water, weather layers and an emergency plan appropriate to remoteness and season.
COMMUNITY FIELD INTELLIGENCE

Approved visitor reports add current observations without automatically changing a location’s legal or access status.

EXPLORE UTAH LOCALLY
Rockhounding near Utah cities
Move from statewide discovery into nearby field regions and then into individual location guides. City pages rank nearby records by evidence status and distance instead of treating every geological occurrence as an open collecting site.
Utah rockhounding regions and local areas
Regional pages group related geology and field opportunities without turning every mineral occurrence into a separate destination page.
