Giant City State Park allows detecting under the park permit process, but not around the lodge, within Fern Rocks Nature Preserve, or at Stone Fort. Shovels are not allowed. The official Giant City State Park guidance provides the park’s visitor-center permit process and restrictions.
Prohibited properties and general permits
Matthiessen State Park, Buffalo Rock State Park and the relevant I&M Canal-associated protected park sites are classified as prohibited in this inventory. Do not assume that a general IDNR permit or nearby allowed park authorizes detecting at these locations. Obtain specific written rules from the site manager.
