River gravel bars are among the most useful places to look because flowing water repeatedly moves, knocks, sorts, and exposes stones. A successful mixed barrel depends more on similar hardness and sound texture than on the name of the rock. Many hobbyists get poor results because they mix a hard piece of agate with soft calcite, porous sandstone, flaky mica-rich rock, and fractured quartz. The softer pieces disappear or shed grit while the harder pieces remain rough.

Wet it
Wet the loose stone and look for color, banding, translucency, grain, pits, and fractures. The wet surface is a rough preview of what a polished surface may emphasize, not a guarantee of final polish.
Inspect every face
Turn the stone in strong light. One clean side can hide a fracture that runs through the entire piece. Open cracks often widen during coarse grinding.
Check the texture
