Start mineral identification with observation, a 10× loupe and simple property tests such as hardness when appropriate. Precision scales, microscopes, refractometers and UV equipment are useful only when the specimen and identification question require those measurements.

Can one test identify a mineral?

Usually not. Strong identification combines several independent properties such as habit, luster, hardness, streak, density/specific gravity, optical behavior and context.

Should I hardness-test a valuable specimen?

Not automatically. Scratch testing is destructive. Use a discreet sacrificial area only when appropriate, or choose non-destructive evidence first.

When does a refractometer make sense?

It is most useful for suitable polished gemstones and users who understand contact, reading and instrument limits. It is not a field replacement for basic mineralogy.

Why use a microscope if a loupe is cheaper?

A loupe is excellent for fast field observation. A gemological microscope adds stable magnification and controlled illumination for inclusions/surface features when those observations matter.
