Rockhounding in Meghalaya
Meghalaya currently has 61 sourced map records in this explorer. Meghalaya combines famous limestone/cave geology with granite, quartzite, sillimanite, feldspar, kaolin, glass sand, gypsum, phosphate and critical-mineral exploration. Official state sources provide many named localities, but much of the mineral inventory is resource, lease, community-land or cave context. This release therefore keeps extraction/resource records non-navigable and limits navigation to a small set of official geology-viewing/geotourism sites.

Why Meghalaya is important for limestone caves, sillimanite, granite and critical-mineral geology
The Meghalaya plateau exposes Precambrian gneiss and Shillong Group quartzites, Jurassic Sylhet Trap volcanics and Cretaceous–Tertiary sedimentary belts. The state DMR documents major limestone resources, globally notable sillimanite, granite, clay/kaolin, glass sand, feldspar, phosphate, gypsum and base-metal occurrences, while current DMR notices add ion-adsorption-clay/laterite REE exploration in the Sung Valley. The explorer separates this geological evidence from permission to collect.

Access and collecting rules
Meghalaya has exceptionally diverse plateau geology including limestone and cave systems, sillimanite, granite, quartz/feldspar, kaolin/clay, glass sand, gypsum, phosphate, bauxite, base-metal traces and current REE exploration. Many documented localities are mines, mineral resources, leases, community/tribal lands, caves or exploration areas. Geological occurrence is not collecting permission; verify land/community authority, protected status, mineral rights and current rules before removing material.
Dataset last reviewed: September 8, 2026. Coordinates are reference points; some mineral databases warn that locality coordinates may be generalized.
