What is the most important rockhounding gear for a beginner?
Begin with eye protection, gloves, sturdy footwear, navigation, a field loupe and simple carrying/labeling supplies. Add impact or extraction tools only when the site rules and geology justify them.
Should I buy a rock tumbler or a lapidary saw first?
Buy for the next process you actually intend to perform. A tumbler is useful for suitable small rough when rounding and polishing are the goal; a saw is necessary when larger rough must be cut into controlled slabs or preforms.
Does expensive equipment automatically produce better results?
No. Capacity, material fit, setup, consumables and technique matter more than price alone. Oversized machines can add cost, space and maintenance without improving the work you actually do.
